It has passed the House, and can now be stopped only in the U.S. Senate. This bill eviscerates the 48-year-old Wilderness Act, which constitutes the central core of wildlife conservation in the United States. Signed by Lyndon Johnson, the Wilderness Act defines wilderness in concise and lyrical terms: “A wilderness, in contrast with those areas where man and his own works dominate the landscape, is hereby recognized as an area where the earth and community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.”
